Cold water can be dangerous – even deadly. Learn how to stay safe in and around cold water.
Cold shock is the body’s natural response to cold water submersion. Cold shock causes a sudden change in breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure
Why is cold shock dangerous?
- The involuntary gasping or hyperventilating can lead to drowning if water is inhaled.
- The spike in heart rate and blood pressure can cause heart failure or stroke for vulnerable populations.
- Cold shock itself can cause immediate panic, impairing judgement.
Be prepared:
- Always wear a life jacket in and around the water.
- Know the water temperature before you go near the water.
- Dress for water temperature, not air temperature.
